Healing Hands Ancient Practice

Gentle Energy. Quiet Presence. Healing Through Choice

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing practice that supports a horse’s natural ability to restore balance—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

There is nothing a horse has to do during a Reiki session. There are no expectations, no pressure, and no agenda. The horse is always free to choose how, or even if, they wish to participate.

And my work with horses is guided by the same principles that shape every aspect of Heart to Horse Connection — respect presence, compassion, and trust in the horse’s innate wisdom.

Why Horses Respond to Reiki

Horses are deeply sensitive beings. They live fully in the present moment and often respond to subtle changes in energy long before we become aware of them ourselves.

Some horses become deeply relaxed. Others yawn, sigh, lick and chew, lower their heads, or simply become still. Some choose to stand close, while others receive from a distance. Occasionally, a horse may decide they have received enough and quietly walk away.

Every response is honoured.
Reiki is never something done to a horse.
It is an invitation, and the horse always has the final say.
Supporting the Whole Horse

Equine Reiki may help support:

  • deep relaxation
  • emotional balance
  • recovery from illness or injury alongside veterinary care
  • stress reduction
  • transitions such as moving barns or herd changes
  • senior and companion horses
  • horses experiencing grief or loss
  • overall well-being

Because every horse is unique, every Reiki session is unique.

My Approach

Whether I am mentoring a new Horse Companion or offering Reiki, my intention is never to fix a horse.

Instead, I seek to create a space where horses feel safe, respected, heard, and free to simply be themselves.

I believe horses possess extraordinary wisdom. When we slow down, quiet our minds, and meet them with an open heart, they often show us exactly what they need.

Sometimes healing begins not with doing more…

…but with simply being fully present.

“In stillness, healing begins. In presence, trust grows. In partnership, both horse and human are transformed.”

A Session with Whistler

One experience beautifully illustrates what Reiki often looks like when a horse is free to choose.

Whistler entered the shelter where the session was being offered. Based on previous experiences, he initially anticipated clicker training and treats, offering familiar behaviours such as lowering his head and touching my hands.

When those rewards were not offered, his attention naturally shifted toward me and the Reiki session began.

Over the next forty minutes, Whistler remained remarkably calm and engaged. During the session he:

  • sighed softly
  • offered gentle snorts
  • rested a hind foot
  • shifted closer of his own accord
  • remained quietly present with very little movement

After the session, Whistler appeared deeply relaxed and sleepy. Although his hay was outside the shelter and he was completely free to leave at any time, he chose to remain there until we quietly departed.

For me, the most meaningful part of the experience was not simply the signs of relaxation. It was that Whistler consistently exercised choice. He willingly exchanged the expectation of treats for a peaceful experience that asked nothing of him except permission to share the moment.

That, to me, is the essence of Reiki.
